Fine Point Consulting Client Spotlight: Propeller Health

One of the most enjoyable things about Fine Point Consulting is being a part of the process of growth for our clients. Propeller Health is one such client- a client that we’ve witnessed take its market by storm. We are delighted to share more about them with this latest blog post.

Tell us about Propeller Health.

Propeller Health is a leading digital therapeutics company dedicated to the development and commercialization of measurably better medicines. Our digital medicine platform helps patients manage diseases like asthma and COPD by delivering concrete insights on symptoms, triggers and medication use.

Patients connect a small sensor to their inhalers, which is paired with a mobile app. Through the Propeller platform, patients receive reminders to take their medication, forecasts on asthma conditions and tips for reducing symptoms. Propeller can reveal a patient’s most common environmental triggers, helping them avoid flare-ups. With the patient’s consent, the platform can communicate to the patient’s physician to show how the patient is doing between appointments.

Propeller is based in Madison, WI with an office in San Francisco and remote employees throughout the U.S. and Europe.

Tell us about the type of clients/customers you work with.

Our patients are people with asthma and COPD who are looking for new insights about their disease, need help managing their symptoms or remembering to take their medication, or who want to create a better communication channel with their provider via a digital tool. Our patients acquire Propeller through our 65 commercial programs with healthcare systems, PBMs, pharma companies and insurance companies.

What sets your company apart from competitors?

We believe that Propeller has an unparalleled focus in our category on proving patient outcomes. We have published 18 peer-reviewed studies in industry-leading journals and have a research team dedicated to further understanding respiratory disease, the patient experience with our platform and how we can positively impact public health.

Propeller also covers more than 90 percent of inhaled medicines for asthma and COPD on the market, more than any other competitor. We understand that patients with asthma and COPD often use multiple medicines to treat their disease, and therefore our solution must span multiple medicines to treat the reality of asthma and COPD.

Tell us about any big news you’ve had lately at Propeller.

Propeller was recently acquired by ResMed, a leading connected health company that serves millions of people with respiratory disease around the world — our biggest news of 2018 and a very exciting moment for our team. We are thrilled about the opportunity to accelerate the adoption of Propeller’s platform around the world with the help of ResMed’s scale, reach and experience.

What’s the most common misconception people have about your field/type of work?

While the day-to-day world of a startup moves quickly, the journey to adoption and scale in the healthcare industry takes time. At Propeller, we are always balancing the iterative, nimble approach of a tech startup with the necessarily more measured pace and methodology of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.

Why has Madison been the right place for your business? What local resources have you taken advantage of and/or how are you contributing to the entrepreneurial/tech community?

Madison was ranked third in the nation last year for tech talent, and our tech industry is growing rapidly. This is a great city to build a company, source and grow great employees, and contribute to a burgeoning tech community. Our leadership is heavily involved in groups around the city dedicated to mentoring young people in our field and networking with like-minded people.

What is the single most important thing the Madison tech community is doing to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship?

We believe, bone deep, that diversity in tech is critical to building software that serves a diverse range of people. In the Madison area, we still have work to do when it comes to making tech more inclusive, and some of the most important work happening now is building pipelines, networks and support systems that help increase the presence and power of people of color, women and other diverse candidates in our industry.

What’s one piece of advice you have for your clients?

Our most successful programs occur when the client side is helmed by someone with a deep passion and belief in the power of digital health. We encourage our clients to find that person and empower them to lead the organization through the digital transformation.
