The Need for a Scalable Finance Solution
Founded in 2014 by Casey Putschoegl and Paige McPheely, Base began as a staffing agency focused on high-level executive assistants provided on a fractional basis. Over time, the company evolved to include a proprietary technology platform supporting assistants and their executive partners. As the company scaled—and later merged its service and tech entities—Casey found herself increasingly stretched, particularly in managing finance, HR, and operations.
“We were trying to duct tape a finance solution together,” Casey recalls. “It involved freelance bookkeepers, me doing AP/AR, and even some bookkeeping. It wasn’t sustainable.”
Finding the Right Financial Partner
That’s when Base turned to Fine Point Consulting. Partnering with Fine Point, Base found the expertise they needed with Danny Burns as their controller-level lead and Erica Laube as their hands-on accountant.
“Danny brought a breath of fresh air,” says Casey. “And Erica? She’s as reliable as a full-time team member.”
Navigating Change and Achieving Profitability
With Erica’s detailed oversight and Danny’s strategic direction, Fine Point became a true extension of the Base team. They helped navigate one of Base’s biggest transitions: shifting from a high-burn, VC-backed model to a lean, profitable business. “That shift meant major cuts and process overhauls,” Casey explains. “Fine Point helped us manage those transitions and held us accountable along the way.”
Base now runs on a leaner internal team and relies heavily on Fine Point for both tactical and strategic finance support. “Erica catches things I miss—and I’m detail-oriented. That level of ownership from someone who isn’t even an employee is rare and invaluable.”
As Casey stepped away from a full-time role and into a fractional leadership position, she felt confident knowing Fine Point could step in. “They’ve filled in quality checks I used to handle myself.”
A Scalable Solution for Every Stage of Growth
When asked what she’d tell other founders considering outsourcing their finance function, Casey doesn’t hesitate: “It’s a no-brainer. Once you’re doing $100K to $200K in revenue, it’s time. You need accurate books and reliable reports to run your company smartly.”
She also emphasizes Fine Point’s ability to scale: “You don’t outgrow them. We’ve raised money, considered acquisitions—they’ve been there through all of it. The level of care they show makes me feel like I’m their only client.”
Even through team transitions, Casey says Fine Point has maintained consistent, thoughtful support. “Hand-offs have been smooth. I never felt like I had to take on more work—it’s been seamless.”
Trusted Partnership, Long-Term Impact
“Especially for founders who aren’t finance-minded, Fine Point is essential,” says Casey. “Even as someone who is, I’d rather focus on building the business. Having a partner like Fine Point in all things money? That’s invaluable.”
At Fine Point Consulting, we pride ourselves on being more than just an outsourced service provider. Base’s success story is a testament to what can be achieved when a company partners with the right team. We are honored to play such a vital role in helping them execute on their mission to optimize the way EAs and leaders work together.
